The Mozilla enterprise of browser Firefox now no longer sells “open-source” smartphone

A recém-criada Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) já permite aos usuários navegarempor mais de dois milhões de livros arquivados, imagens, registros e sons.
Dela participam instituições como a Universidade de Harvard, a Internet Archive, e as bibliotecas públicas de Boston, Chicago e São Francisco bibliotecas públicas, conforme artigo publicado na Ars Technica.
Os serviços já incluem uma interface de programação de aplicativo (API), facilitando o acesso, e está se ligando a bibliotecas regionais e locais para permitir o acesso a jornais locais e arquivos públicos para fazerem pesquisas de famílias, por exemplo.
A pouco tempo atrás, o site da Ars escreveu os desafios da DPLA: “A organização deve ser um banco de documentos, com uma vasta quantidade de metadados, uma advocacia para defesa de pessoas processadas, uma parceria com editoras, uma maneira de não tornar irrelevantes o acesso às biblioteca locais (como livros online, por exemplo), não dando razão se cortarem os financiamentos nestas bibliotecas. Segundo o site Mashable a venda de livros digitais atingiu 22,55% do total de livros no ano passado, o estudo foi publicado pela Associação Americana de Editores, a StatShot e faz a comparação do segmento 17% em 2011, e de apenas 3% em 2009.
O site ainda traz algumas tiras em quadrinhos dizendo: livros são amigos que nunca te deixam, incentivando a leitura.
Segundo a associação dos editores, a receita com os ebooks chegou a US$ 1,54 bilhão no ano passado, mas há muitas críticas a atuação das revendas de ebooks, na Alemanha as editoras nacionais reagiram a Amazon e junto com a Deutsche Telekom produziram um eReader próprio chamado eReader Tolino em 7 de março, com 300 mil livros disponíveis.
Também na Inglaterra a pressão da Amazon e sentida, a rede Waterstones estão sob a pressão pelo sucesso da Amazon, mas ainda não há nenhum esboço de reação lá.
Mas a questão do formato curiosamente parece estar superando as receitas, segundo o site de análise Pew na semana passada, 21% dos adultos leram um e-book no ano passado, talvez no e-reader dos filhos ou de algum amigo.

As grandes pesquisas em computação estão se
voltando para grandes volumes de dados, o chamado Big Data, conforme notícia do New York Times.
A Universidade de Columbia, para “debutar” seu novo Instituto de Ciências e Engenharia de Dados, realizou na última sexta-feira (05/04) um simpósio de um dia inteiro intitulado “Do Big Data às Big Ideias”.
O instituto é uma junção de centros interdisciplinares, para a segurança cibernética, análises financeiras, análises de saúde, novas mídias e cidades inteligentes.
Diversas análises sobre conjunto de tecnologias chamado Big Data, com novos dados e novas ferramentas de inteligência artificial, que poderão realmente transformar as indústrias, como novas capacidades de previsão.
O simpósio, “Do Big Data Para Big Ideas”, foi, principalmente, uma celebração da promessa da tecnologia nos campos de cuidados de saúde ao transporte, com apresentações de Columbia professores e cientistas da computação de empresas como Google, Facebook, Microsoft e Bloomberg.
Os perigos de privacidade e vigilância de Big Data também surgiram de passagem, mas durante uma seção de perguntas e respostas de um painel, o oficial de informações da Google, Ben Fried, expressou um receio. “Minha preocupação é que a tecnologia está muito à frente da sociedade”, disse Fried disse. “Há perigo”, ele sugeriu, “que apenas uma elite técnica entender Big Data e suas implicações, com o risco de uma tecnologia de fuga ou uma rejeição do público”.
