News in Google News
After several announcements, finally in the second half of May Google launched its new application, only now I have been able to take a look at the application that replaces Google Play Nwesstad, now with use of Artificial Intelligence.
The application works on using machine learning to train algorithms that scour complex and recent news stories and divides them into an easy-to-understand format with timelines, local news and stories presented in a sequence according to the evolution of the facts, for example , the start of a football match, its most important bids, the result and the consequences.
This section which are news that the algorithms think important to you have the name For You, follow 3 more sections so divided: The second section is called Manchete, where the latest news and specific topics are presented. Here is a subsection where you can choose to read the news through Full Coverage by Google, where Google splits it into items from a variety of social media sources, letting you know where and when it happened.
The third section shows favorites, such as the top topics the user usually accesses, the AI has great work there, goes to the owner’s favorite sources, saves stories for later readings, and saves searches according to the location of the texts.
And finally the White Play (White Play) which is the addition of the new Google news, which allows the user to access and subscribe services with premium content in news sites.
While a part of the critique continues to duel with the old canned news schemes linked to editorial groups, the world of personalized news evolves
Alexa: Amazon personal assistant
It may not seem like a new phenomenon in technology since there are wizards like Siri, Cortana or Google Now, but the fact that this wizard is really personal, that’s why I called the others for voice assistants, is the fact that it learns and stores the data in a private cloud from Amazon Web Service (AWS).
These personal assistants although all grounded by the use of voice there are differences, they can learn from specific people habits and functions they desire, while the voice assistant, as I call Siri and Google Now now empordered by Dialogflow, as we explained in the post above, they can respond and learn from human interaction, but may, if it is desirable to organize their own database.
Alexa (because I’m the personal assistant I think is masculine, but it can be the same) is centralized in the Amazon cloud and has its own equipment that is Amazon Echo, a column always connected to the Internet via WiFi that is attentive to dialogues of its “owner”.
Streaming music services using Spotify or Pandora, you can read the news of the main newspapers you prefer, inform the weather forecast or the traffic on the way to work, can control all equipment at home that are Smart Home, including it can identify and tell about compatibility, plus its capacity goes beyond.
In addition, it promises to check basic things like solving math accounts or getting into a conversation and even telling jokes, over time this bank and this ability will evolve.
But beware, we have already written here about the myth of singularity (especially the book by Jean Gabriel Ganascia), the idea that this will turn a monster and control you is less true than to individualize and stop talking to friends and relatives
How do we think it is to think
From the Algebra of 0 and 1 of Boole, through the first computers of Charles Babbage, arriving at the thoughts of Vannevar Bush and Norbert Wiener of the MIT of the 40, we came across Alan Turing and Claude Shannon, the final question: the machine one day will think
What we see between Sophia Robot’s investment appeal to the “personal assistants” market is a long history of what it means to think, but the question now due to technoprofets (name given to the alarmists by Jean-Gabriel Ganascia) is inevitable.
Vannevar Bush had a data processing machine in his MIT lab, where he went to work a trainee named Claude Shannon, says James Gleick who was the one who suggested to his student that he study Boole’s Algebra.
Vannevar Bush in his historical text As We May Think, although it does not say as we would think, speaks of the future possibilities of new advances: “Consider a future device … in which an individual stores all his books, records, and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility. It is an enlarged intimate supplement to his memory.” (Bush, As We may think).
It creates the embryonic idea of a computer that relates text, as it has done in searches since the beginning of the Gutenberg print, but its Memex machine (picture) was already thought of as a vast capacity of records and communications, even if the phone was still nascent in the final years of World War II and communications depended on powerful antennas.
What is certain is that in the end your text little or almost nothing says about what is actually thinking and as it still is today in Artificial Intelligence, what we have done is to expand more and more the capacity of memory and communication, as well as of large amounts of data, now with techniques called Big Data.
Another contemporary tendency is to ask for the autonomy of the machines, the experiments carried out, even with the so-called “autonomous vehicles” are the basis of algorithms and they depend on the decision making of how the human being will do in certain circumstances, in critical cases, like deciding between two tragedies, the choice can be terrible.
The (in) visible relations and networks
One of the issues in focus today is social networks, they are not of today, the problem is that today they are in evidence, but they continue to keep certain aspects of invisibility, confused with virtuality, make a historical analysis.
The networks of commerce in antiquity, by sea and by land, the invisible colleges, defined by Solla Price in her work “The development of science: historical, philosophical, sociological and economic analysis” of 1976 (in Brazilian edition), calls the scientific networks of collaborative networks, where researchers communicate, exchange information and experiences, means that even in the absence, through printed works and conferences, authors collaborate.
Essentially, a network is a web of nodes and links between nodes, although these participants are autonomous, the consequences of network connections can exceed their own limits by connecting to “out” through weak links. In the analysis of networks can be identified only for didactic reasons, three types: ego networking, global networking networks and networks of actors relationships, called TAN (Theory Actor-Network) with origin in the works of Michel Callon.
Airport networks, container transport networks around the world, Global networks are strongly influenced by the media, and they create a certain amount of invisibility, since the collaborative networks of publications are also called invisible colleges by authors like Solla Price, but accelerated by the speed of the media, electronic media is larger speed of publication and communication that prints it, then blog, twitter and the social media media like Facebook occupy a new role at the present time, but are not in themselves networks, but networks media.
Several measures can be thought of, the centrality of closeness of an actor measures how close a node is to all others, the greater the proximity measure, the intermediation betweenness measures the importance of a node in the circulation of information. So, for information effect, betweenness is the measure of control that an actor holds in the flow of information and closeness is the facility that an actor has of access to information.
The invisibility, emphasizing present in the “invisible” colleges in modernity, is relative to the process of communication and information that can go beyond the actor actors along the network, virtuality in turn refers to the potentiality of increasing the capacity of the network
What we can read in 2018
One of the books in my stack of new reading is Sapiens – a brief history of humanity by Yuval Noah Harari, the original English edition is 2015, but the Portuguese edition that comes to Brazil, by the editors of Porto Alegre LP & M in Brazil , it is 2017 with translation by Janaína Marcoantonio, just leaf through until now, but I already feel the weight of the book as from the opening chapter The cognitive revolution, with the topic an insignificant animal, until the Scientific Revolution, with the first topic: the discovery of ignorance.
We have already punctuated in several posts about the discovery of the Chauvet Cave, the book opens The cognitive revolution with a human hand (picture inside) in this cave of 30 thousand years ago, a painting the first chapter that I have already begun to read.
Whoever wants to make a counterpoint, a classic book (my brother pointed out to me) is H.G. Wells’ book, it goes back to the very beginning of the universe. Published in 1922, A Brief History of the World is a panorama about the planet and humanity, from the appearance of living beings, through the origin of peoples, religions, great navigations, wars, Industrial Revolution until the First War World, the book is from 1922, and curiously it is also from LP & M, in brazilian edition.
I’m going to Portugal next year, at least I want to go (yes it’s the money), launched in November the book by Ricardo Araujo Pereira: “Reacctionary with two c´s”, speaks of the conservative wave in Portugal, but I think it should also speak of Europe and around the world, his book “Illness, Suffering and Death Go into a Bar” was a complete success with 40,000 copies sold, this new one should not be different.
A book that I have already read and I will reread is the Byung-Chul Han’s “Society of Tiredness”, in a whole new light, it traces the profile of a society that can not, for more goods, produce a human being greater happiness and speaks of an absence of meaning of life, the end that criticism does not taste is very good, worth reading.
Speaking of the happiness of Augusto Cury, but this time with several authors, the happiest man in history – several authors, I do not know if he will comment other authors or if it will include them in his reflection, but this does not matter, it seems that the already consecrated author has reached maturity in the search for a collective discourse, is already among the most sold in Brazil.
Among these four there is no sequel, but would say so for those most concerned with politics, and they are right, would start with the Portuguese Ricardo Araujo Pereira, and would end with Augusto Cury, for the lazy would end up with Sapiens – a brief history of humanity , because it is dense and great too, it has 448 pages without counting the index.
The lazy reader can still start with the Byung-Chul book which is only 128 pages in small format (this giving almost half A4 in Brazilian edition).
Of course there are many other readings, but if you read 4 books a year, at the end of your life you will be a thinker, living on average 70 years and discounting the 14 of adolescence, although we can read children’s books and for young people, 56 years x 4 books, 224 books and you is a great lecture
Last Testament: In His Own Words
Pope Benedict XVI’s most recent book is on the pews, unappreciated even within the church and scarcely read and understood by the narrow circle of “exegetes” and Vaticanists, he breaks the silence for truth, which he loves as much as Gospel.
It was announced on the Bloomsbury Publishing website, which people who enjoy reading should see, far better than ideological gospel or unprepared homilies, the site says that the publication has 224 pages, and will be widely read by the people the church swears to love, but Is far
Bentinho, as I call him, will speak of things that no one imagines he would speak, but as a lover of Truth, I imagine that one day I would speak, of course to write. he turned 90 years in Easter.
The case that became known as “Vatileaks”, which the butler called Gorgeous George, because gorgeous means beautiful, a mysterious secretary who leaked the letters people of Bento, who claimed corruption and scandals within the Vatican.
He speaks of his supposed formation in the Nazi party, his attempts to solve the “subject of the church” (sexual abuse, pedophilia, gays, etc.) and how he actually sees all this, I will read.
Benedict tried to undo pressure groups inside the Vatican, and although he was surprised by Francisco, personally I think he prepared for the path of a successor with a new proposal, more open and really linked to the “people.”
According to comments, he speaks with joy of the successor, and speaks of both the man and the pope, but confesses that he did not imagine him as a successor, God always surprises.
An inimy of the people
The Brazilian Justice Minister of the STF Edson Fachin quoted Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) last week, after being defeated against the release of cattle rancher Bumlai and the former treasurer of PP Genu, said he thought about re-reading An enemy of the people, where the Norwegian writer narrates A certain Dr. Stockmann who, being a doctor, claims that the city’s water was contaminated, but that water was the main source of income for that community.
Thus he narrates the contradictions between the conscience of work in favor of the common good and the desire to achieve unanimity, a fact that made Dr. Stockmann come in shock with the petty interests of the city.
Ibsen, whose anarchist ideas had a great influence on intellectuals and politicians of the society of his time, is perhaps one of the reasons that these Nordic countries enjoy a good reputation in relation to corruption, the distribution of income and politicians who do not use politics, but Make it a service.
Anarchist ideals are present when Dr. Stockmann states: ” only free thinking, new ideas, the ability to think differently from the other, the contradictory, can contribute to progress Material and moral of the population, “anarchism aside, is the difficulty for a true dialogue.
She had not read, I read her most famous book is House of Dolls, completed in 1979, and staged for the first time in Copenhagen in Denmark at the theater Det Kongelige Teater, which provoked controversy for denouncing the exclusion of women in modern society, and which gave prominence to Ibsen’s thinking not only in Scandinavia but throughout the world.
What Fachin wanted to point out in citing “An enemy of the people” is the real danger that the Lava-jet operation will probably release all those implicated in the corruption scandals in Brazil, failing to make an important adjustment in our history and we will never be a Sweden or A Norway because there are no leaders capable of pointing out a path of “clean-up” and an end to illicit enrichment from the abuse of the public purse.
On the day of work it would be important not only to make an average with the working class, but to show which polluted waters actually undermine the health of their wages and the public services offered to them.
Librarian’s Day and a Guard
Tomorrow, the 12 of March is the day of the librarian in honor of the birth date of the librarian, writer and poet Manuel Bastos Tigre, day created by Decree 84.631 of 09/04/1980, signed by the then president of the Republic João Figueiredo.
The writer and engineer Manuel Bastos Tigre was born on March 12, 1882, being an engineer, went to do an improvement in electricity in the United States. There he met the librarian Melvil Dewey, who left him interested in the profession. At age 33, Manuel went to work with librarianship.
He was first in the contest for librarian of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro, and from 1945 to 1947 worked at the National Library, then took over the direction of the Central Library of the University of Brazil.
Librarians have a protector, for Catholics, Saint Isidore (or Izidro in Castilian, country of their origin, was in fact Visigoth converted to Christianity).
Isidoro was the first Christian writer to attempt to compile a summa of universal knowledge in his masterpiece, Etymologiae, also known by the classicists as “Origines” (abbreviated as “Orig.”).
This encyclopedia – the first epitome of the Christian type – consisted of a huge compilation in 448 chapters divided into twenty volumes.
In it, Isidorus, in a concise manner, summarized manuals, “miscellanea” and Roman compendiums, continuing a tradition of abstracts and summaries that characterized Roman literature of Late Antiquity.
Because of this, many fragments of classical teaching that would otherwise have been lost were preserved; “In fact, in most of his works, including the” Origines “, he contributed little more than the cement role linking fragments of other authors, as if he knew of his own shortcomings and relying more on the ‘stilus maiorum’ of That on its own, “recalls Katherine Nell MacFarlane, who translated her work into English.
Isidore was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1598 by Pope Clement VIII and declared Doctor of the Church in 1722 by Innocent XIII.
In Dante’s Paradise (X.130), Isidore is mentioned among other theologians and Doctors of the Church, and is also considered patron of Librarians.
Machado and the literary canon
I have always found insufficient the analysis of Machado de Assis, it was necessary to look at an educated Machado and like any good intellectual capable of influencing, without losing his Brazilian, mulatto and great brazilian author.
The author Sonia Netto Salomão, wrote the book released this year Machado and the literary canon (Eduerj, 434 pp.,2016), she is Brazilian, but is a professor at the University of Rome La Sapienza, and deepened her studies in the Italian context Of Rio de Janeiro in the second half of the nineteenth century, with a strong influence of Dante, Machiavel, Leopardi and emphasized his condition of frequent spectator of operas and dramatic theater in Rio de Janeiro, and the strong Italian influence in the book Dom Casmurro.
This analysis is going to go unnoticed for some time, because we oscillate in a good part of the national mentality, or by a European xenophobia (the American is worse), without realizing our strong European influences, or by an uncritical adherence of foreign readings being unable to see the nuances Of adherence in the national culture of Western thought.
The book costs around $ 60.00 (U$ 16) and was published by editor Eduerj in 2016.
