Brazilian participate physical experience

29 Sep

An experiment that made mass precise measurements of particles and electricSimetria charges, made in with ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment), the detector of heavy ions in the Large Hadron Collider ring (LHC), confirmed the existence of a fundamental symmetry in nature, the result was published in Nature on 17 August this year.

The researchers include Brazilian researchers associated with the University of São Paulo (USP) and the University of Campinas (Unicamp), including Marcelo Gameiro Munhoz, professor at the Institute of Physics at USP (IF) who explained:

“After the Big Bang, for each particle of matter an antiparticle was created. In particle physics, an important question is whether all the laws of physics exhibit a specific type of symmetry known as CPT [charge, parity and time] and these measurements suggest that there is indeed a fundamental symmetry between cores and antinuclear “, the apparent asymmetry between matter and antimatter is one of the biggest problems without physical solution.

The power loss measurements on the projection time chamber allow the ALICE experiment to identify antinúcleos (curved upper left) and nuclei (curved upper right) produced in collisions of lead ions in the LHC (in picture).

Munhoz is the principal investigator of the research project “high-energy nuclear physics at RHIC and LHC”, supported by the Research Foundation of São Paulo (FAPESP).
