Between the truce and the escalation of conflicts

12 May

A worrying new scenario has emerged in India’s dispute with Pakistan over the Kashmir region. There have been border attacks and fortunately a ceasefire was declared soon afterwards with the intermediation of the United States, even China has interests in the region (map).

Hostilities began on April 22 after clashes on the border and last Friday (May 9) an Indian bombing killed five civilians and injured 29 others, with a Pakistani response with drones and bombs.

Another worrying scenario is Russia’s border region with Finland. The United Kingdom and Finland carried out NATO tactical defense training called Exercise Mighty Arrow 25, the aim of which is to strengthen defense cooperation in that huge border region with Russia.

There are prospects of a truce; the Soviet government has agreed to direct negotiations with Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul, Turkey, and Ukraine is expected to lose territory.

The conflict between Hamas and Israel continues. A senior Hamas official told Reuters that an Israeli-American hostage, Edan Alexander, would be released as a gesture to facilitate ceasefire negotiations with Israel, in the meantime, negotiations have begun unabated.

At the Victory Day parade in Moscow, attended by the Kremlin’s allies, Russian troops fighting in Ukraine and also troops from China and North Korea paraded, reinforcing the idea of alignment between the countries, other rulers were present such as Nicolas Maduro, Daniel Ortega and President Lula of Brazil.

The new Pope Leo XIV said in his Sunday appearance “war never again”, having already said “evil will not win” and not referring to either side in the conflict, but the end of conflicts.

This is a decisive step towards peace. If there are no clear agreements, escalation is expected.
